Is This Foster The People Cover GOOD or BAD?

Jun 13th | categories: Music, Video

Based on the popularity of Girl Talk's set at the recent giant festival performance, people love a good mashup. How about a cover? What's essential for successfully covering someone else's song? For me, it's heart. If you can give it the honesty it deserves - not the arrangement as much the intention - you can wind up with a great cover.

Usher, you know the guy that made that "YEAH" song popular, took a stab at covering Foster The People's 2011 smash "Pumped Up Kicks". He used a full band of superb musicians who played the song likely better than FTP themselves! Watch it and then we can dish on what worked/sucked about it:

Woah! He plays the bass. Oh wait... only until he starts singing. Is he actually plugged in? Can he not play and sing? Fair enough that's a tough skillset. Oh sweet, the chorus... that he's not signing cause he's playing the bass. Wait, what?

Is this cover GOOD or BAD?

Better than I thought it would be, but no where near Foster the People.

In a way its good.. but in a way its not.. I would think he wouldn't need back up singers. haha his voice is out of place.

I think that the main melody is being played actually by a guitar. Usher is plugged in on bass, but very low in the mix: you can hear his bass clearly at the breakdown about 2:40. That is his bass sound. Anyways actually the band did well, he sang well, but I too wanted more of his lead vocal on the chorus. Props to Usher for having good taste. This surprised me very much
