VIDEO: Fans Bum-Rush Floor During M83's Bumbershoot Set

Sep 04th | categories: Music, Music News

Yesterday during M-83's Bumbershoot performance at the Key Arena - a throng of fans forced their way by security in order to gain access to a floor (by most accounts - there was A LOT of room to spare)

This sort of thing isn't uheard of at giant General Admission show's like Bumbershoot. One one hand in can create a cool "take the power back" concert moment that everyone remembers - provided no one gets hurt.

A great example of this was the 2005 Endfest show where Queens of the Stone Age front-man Josh Homme invited everyone on the grass down into the lower bowl for their closing set (a very cool move that everyone - even security - seemed to enjoy)

Of course - there is a negative side to this sort of things as well - with a distinct possibility of serious injuries if things get out of control

My buddy Chris at the Seattle Weekly wrote a good article on how incidents like this can change these festivals in the future - usually for the worse

Took a better video but not as close, you can really see how many people pulled it off! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iKVd7FBONEs

I was already in the pit legitimately when the set started, and there was *definitely* more than enough room to accomodate people. I've been to a lot of shows in the Key Arena and usually you can eyeball the pit at being about 2/3 full of people, which is all well and good for safety concerns. At the beginning of M83 it looked about half full. The bum rushers livened up the party and the set was all the better for it. Rock on Bumbershoot!

The loudest cheers for that set were when people bum-rushed the floor. Everyone was so agitated with how ridiculous security was in there; that act of rebellion definitely lightened the mood in the room. The lesson to the organizers of Bumbershoot is that there was TOO MUCH SECURITY. Let's be honest, if the floor is too full, people aren't going to go on it. We don't need a bunch of dicks in white shirts telling us that the floor "is full." When I went in, they wouldn't even let us in the lower level seating area because it was "full." Hey douchebags, if there aren't seats, then I won't try to sit there.
