Track Review: Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Sacrilege

Feb 21st | categories: Music News

To say "Sacrilege" is subtle is an understatement. A track that starts off slow and quickly informs it has no intention of giving you what you want, just a creeping tension throughout that keeps the atmosphere on edge, waiting for that kick, that big synth or razor guitar lick that never never comes, Karen O's megaphone vocal sounding bright and commanding as ever. There is a xylophone though, and then the drums sneak in, your hips start to shake, your toe starts to tap. The chorus hits and Karen repeats in a melodic whisper "Sacrilege, Sacrilege, Sacrilege" before giving way to a clean tone noodle/lick from Zinner. The drums sell a reserved groove building until the song bursts into a full on gospel choir chant to take the song to it's peak "SACRILEGE, SACRILEGE, SACRILEGE" before cutting out entirely.
