Oh no, Bertha's stuck!

Dec 10th | categories: Local, News

Bertha, the gigantic tunnel boring machine, stopped abruptly on Friday night after hitting something underground. She should be able to get through just about anything, but whatever's down there is somehow sturdier than Bertha's blades! Many think it could be made of steel, but unfortunately no one knows for sure. What do you think it could be? A sinkhole? The Batcave? The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' lair? Find out what they plan to do to fix the problem overhere.

Since the layer Bertha is currently in is glacial till, could the objects be an erratic containing very hard minerals, that was deposited at the glacier receded? The Northwestern cascades contain large volcanic crystal forms in places... maybe it is just a really inconvenient, hard crystalline erratic.

What's Bertha run into? The hubris of the tunnel backers who said "Of COURSE there won't be any delays or cost overruns on the most expensive and technically challenging and cost-ineffective way to replace the viaduct that results in the smallest traffic volume increase and will require the most expensive ongoing tolls....of COURSE NOT."
