Nine Inch Nails @ KeyArena 11.22.13

Nov 23rd | categories:

For as many years as I can remember, I've considered Trent Reznor to be one of the most brilliant musicians of all time. It's amazing to me that throughout my life in all the various stages one thing that has remained consistent is how much I can relate to the music of Nine Inch Nails. From my teenage years in the 80s with my purple mohawk in the most violent mosh-pits I could find up until now...2013 while I am a bald Dad in the widest photo-pit I can find...one thing has remained consistent...Nine Inch Nails is an incredible band producing music that makes me shout at the top of my lungs whenever I'm listening (very awkward while listening with headphones around other people). Needless to say, going into this Seattle show my expectations were very high. NIN didn't just meet my expectations...they mocked them. I wasn't even close to prepared to how great this concert was going to be.

A perfect set list took us on a roller coaster ride with peaks and valleys of intensity that I've never experienced before. Trent Reznor is the master of pushing a crowd to the limit then easing us all back down to a state of semi-calm followed by a fist to the face pushing us even further than he had done before.

Trent's vocals and the sound in general was absolutely spot-on superior. In addition to great sound the stage was loaded with cutting edge technology that had me holding my breath one moment followed by uncontrollable shouts of "WOWWWW!" this was as close to a perfect concert as I have ever witnessed. My voice is pretty much gone now and it was so worth it. If you were there, you know what I mean. If you weren't you better go next time!

I was so excited to learn that Explosions in the Sky was the opening band. Their CD 'Take Care, Take Care, Take Care' is my go-to CD when starting a road trip of any kind. Their show slowly builds from a soft, melodic, almost hypnotic sound into a fierce peak that ends as quickly as it began. For me, this was the ideal opener for NIN as they helped prepare us for the waves of tension and emotion that were to follow.
