Despite spending half of every season yelling at him to work harder, it's tough to see Freddy Montero bid farewell to us today. He posted the following message to Twitter this morning:
EDIT: It's fair to point out that his departure is only on loan for a year and he could return at it's conclusion.
Despite being annoyingly streaky and working just harder on defense than a 3 toed sloth on his way to a tasty cantaloupe slice, Montero always lit up with just the perfectly weighted touch on a long, high speed run. In his four seasons with Seattle, he put his mark on the game with a goal 47 times including last season's blast from 35 yards out:
In the wake of his exit, I'm looking forward to season two of Game of Thrones Eddie Johnson. Johnson never hustled to celebrate a Montero goal. Rather than lurking in the dark, the lack of teamwork between these two stomped around the pitch like an elephant as they battled to be leading goal scorer. Montero never found the back of the net in a playoff game. EJ came up big in the 2012 post season.
It may be disappointing to lose Fredy, but if the management can secure another player of his quality, perhaps with a higher work rate like Johnson's, the Sounders may actually improve this off-season. Regardless, let's just keep those damn Galaxy from a third consecutive MLS Cup...
