Locals Only Artist of the Month: Father John Misty

Seattle has long been a frontier town that attracts musicians who want to invent and reinvent – from Jimi Hendrix to Kurt Cobain to the next unnamed musical star. While the sound may change from decade to decade, the Northwest’s music scene is as vibrant as ever. And here at The End we feel it’s important to help put our homegrown talent in the forefront by giving you a taste of our cities musical richness.


Josh Tillman, "Father John Misty", a guitarist and songwriter is a former member of Seattle's Fleet Foxes, and has toured extensively with Pacific Northwest artists, Damien Jurado, Jesse Sykes, and David Bazan.When asked about using the moniker: ’It’s all of me and none of me, if you can’t see that, you won’t get it’. What I call it is totally arbitrary, but I like the name. You’ve got to have a name. I never got to choose mine."

After maintaining years of solo recordings, Tillman released 2012's Fear Funvia well known local independent label Sub Pop. About the record Tillman says, "I lost all interest in writing music, or identifying as a ‘songwriter’. I got into my van with enough mushrooms to choke a horse and started driving down the coast with nowhere to go. After a few weeks, I was writing a novel, which is where I finally found my narrative voice. The voice that is actually useful.*
