Jane's Addiction Bumbershoot Mainstage 2012

Sep 02nd | categories:

It was sexy, it was strange…it was Jane’s Addiction!

On April 14, 1989 I saw Jane’s Addiction play the Starry Night Club in Portland, OR and it was by far the greatest concert I’ve ever been to in my life. Any band I shoot or listen to for me is rated on the Jane’s Addiction scale. A few have come close (CTE) but none have gotten there for me. Since then I’ve seen Jane’s Addiction many more times and every show is different. I can’t think of one more different than tonight. For me..Jane’s Addiction equates to happiness. Maybe not so much for the guy that hung himself as part of the show on stage but nonetheless, tonight, I am a happy man.

Headlining the opening day of Bumbershoot 2012 Jane’s Addiction absolutely, 100% completely rocked my face off! First of all, it’s important to say that nobody plays drums like Stephen Perkins..nobody. I tried to get a decent shot of him, I really did. He just barely looked up only once that I saw. Behind his massive drum kit his head is down, his shoulders are up and he beats on those drums like a man possessed. He doesn’t stop. Ever.

Next..Dave Navarro. What can be said about him other than he is a rock star to the core?. As a guitar player his skill is without question at the top level. His stage presence isn’t just about the guitar though. Dave Navarro is cool. I don’t know what else to say. He just is.

Perry Farrell epitomizes rock and roll. Showing off abdominal muscles that I didn’t think were humanly possible his voice goes from hypnotic and melodic to angry and intense. Always powerful, always in control. One thing I know about Perry Farrell is that he is a man filled with love. I realize that sounds sappy but you can just tell he loves his fans, he loves his band, he loves his wife performing on stage with him and he loves his music. I gotta tell you, I love his music too. For my photographic career, that was the main event. I could stop shooting pics tomorrow and would have no regrets. I’m not going to of course..after all Tony Bennett is coming to town! I heard his abs are pretty rockin too!

This Tuesday night Jane’s Addiction plays in Portland. If interested, you’ll find myself and a very good friend in the front row. No camera for me this time..just pure rock and roll and good times! I’m sure he will be reading this review and will share a sip of his red wine with me…right?

The story was pretty good, well written, but you could have shared the Love Fest you feel for Perry a bit more equally with David & Stephen: "On this tree-Among the blossoms-Caustically, I am the thorn..." As for Chris Chaney: Not mentioning him at all (or did I miss something?) was more than just plain rude, it was downright like a slap in the face! I consider the fact alot when reading reviews about Jane's, that there are those who just can't see or write about a Jane's that is sans Eric Avery, yes, you went to see them, but to speak-write-type of three members of Jane's and leave Chris out is not nice at all, indeed, Mr. Hayward, he IS a member of Jane's, do you recall STRAYS? Or are you like the sheep minded others who won't give it half a chance for reasons I mentioned, i.e. No Eric Avery involvement. I am not saying you are, I am, however, saying that my enquiring mind wants to know. The pictures were pretty good too, but also lacking in featuring but a shared spotlight with Perry in one of them (or did I miss something else?)of Chris and in that sir, there ain't no right! I have seen on both David & Perry's twitters, that they consider Chris to be a part of The Jane's Family and when you think of how that heartless, unkind, inconsiderate you-know-who left them in the lurch & Mr Chaney was sweet & KIND enough to travel--always safely, Thank You Lord--& tour with them, well, maybe it will put a different spin on your next Jane's review and you'll rightfully include Chris where he belongs: As member of the LEGENDARY Jane's Addiction... PS I ADORE Eric Avery & miss his place, sound, wisdom, intelligence, drive, soul & feel that he gives to Jane's, it's just kindness Mr. Hayward, letting Chris know he counts and that we notice and care and thank him for being there for our beloved, pioneering, iconic Jane's when they need him the most. MarZiDayZi...thank you so much for writing this comment. You are without question, 100% right. When photographing concerts you are give a very limited amount of time with your camera during the show. Usually it's 3 songs, sometimes less. Jane's was the first band to actually extend the time to 5 songs so my excuse is a bit lame. As I mentioned in the blog this show was important to me personally and I really wanted to capture images of the band I have loved since I was a teenager. That Saturday night was the first time I had seen Jane's live with Chris Chaney and to be perfectly honest I lost focus on him and was really paying much more attention the original members of the band. That being said, last night I saw them at the Keller Auditorium in Portland. My friend and I were front row center and the wedge in front of us had the bass turned up really high so I could clearly hear what he was doing. Because I wasn't taking pictures but was simply enjoying the show (a lot) I did get a chance to watch Chris in action. I think he is the perfect fit to the band. He doesn't try to jump out in the limelight but rather hangs back and shreds. He is fast, his instrument is powerful and he knows how to play in a serious way. It wasn't that I miss Eric Avery in the band as you implied. They tried it, it didn't work. Life goes on. I would rather see someone in the band that has chemistry with everyone to create a positive experience for the band and the fans. Chris Chaney, if you happen to read this I am sincerely sorry for omitting you from the blog. It was a true pleasure watching you perform and I very much look forward to the next time. I promise I'll feature your images much more prominently! -Mat www.MatHaywardPhoto.com

Great pics but you must've been really high that night. The band rocked but Perry sucked so hard I was disappointed that I didn't go see Damian Jurado instead.
