Smashing Pumpkins - Mellon Collie Re-Release

Nov 28th | categories: Music News

Believe it or not there was a time when every editorial written on the Pumpkins didn't have a punchline at the end, and a time when the world was absolutely captivated with the band (the man, whatever). Well good news, that time can be once again as details have finally emerged about the re-release of the bands seminal album, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. Included beyond the usual hooplah of "deluxe packaging" (read: doesn't fit on your ipod) the set comes with 64, yes you read that right. SIXTY FOUR bonus tracks, including unreleased demos, alternate takes, b-sides and more from the era due out December 4th. Pre-order here and check out the full details below...

MELLON COLLIE AND THE INFINITE SADNESS is being released in multiple physical and digital configurations, including an expanded 5CD+DVD Deluxe Box Set (also available digitally) and the remastered original album in 4LP Vinyl, 2CD, and digital formats. The Deluxe Box Set's 5 CDs include 64 bonus tracks of previously unreleased material or alternate versions of MELLON COLLIE era songs, and its DVD features a live show filmed at the Brixton Academy, London (1996) and bonus performances from the German music television show Rockpalast (1996). It all comes housed in a 12 x 12 lift-top box with magnetic closure, reimagined cover art and velvet-lined disc holder. The package includes 2 books containing personal notes, lyrics, new collage artwork, plus a Decoupage kit for creating your own scenes from the MELLON COLLIE universe. The bonus content and special features were curated from the band's archives by CORGAN, and have been painstakingly remastered for the first time from the original master tapes by Bob Ludwig.

Originally released October 24, 1995, MELLON COLLIE AND THE INFINITE SADNESS would debut at #1 on the Billboard 200 chart and was certified 9x platinum by the RIAA. It yielded major hits like "Bullet With Butterfly Wings" the band's unlikely first Top 40 hit the exquisite "1979" and epic "Tonight, Tonight" as well as a thoroughly inspired series of videos. Produced by BILLY CORGAN, Flood and Alan Moulder, the album would also earn a Grammy Award (1996 Best Hard Rock Performance for "Bullet With Butterfly Wings") as well as seven nominations. Beyond the more obvious hits, though, MELLON COLLIE is a song cycle of unusual depth and considerable range. It is a collection of stunningly beautiful moments when everything lined up--a moment in time that's still here to be treasured.

There is no band like Smashing Pumpkins, and this album is their best, in my opinion. I have been a hardcore, hip-hop listener, in the past 15 years but I will always appreciate and be loyal to the best of rock n roll, Smashing Pumpkins is for sure that, the best of rock!! My brother Greg, loved them and was actually invited to audition as a drummer for them back in 2004?. Greg, was a great drummer, obviously, if he was invited to audition for SP!! He decided not to as it would not be a good "family" friendly career. I think what if he would have gone ahead with that road? Maybe, he would still be here with us. That year my brother Greg joined the police department in Kent, WA. He was soon apart of the Lakewood PD and was killed 11/29/09 while meeting 3 of his fellow officers for coffee,(Renniger, Owens and Griswold) just before starting their shifts. All four were gunned down and killed, by Maurice Clemmons. Greg and Clemmons fought, Greg got a round off, which hit Clemmons in the shoulder. Clemmons gained control and shot my brother dead and fled the scene to an awaiting get away driver. Greg died in the doorway of the Forza. His fellow officers Sgt. Mark Renniger, Ofc. Tina Griswold and Ofc. Ronnie Owens died at the table, they had just been chatting and enjoying their coffee, preping for their shift. Clemmons was on the run, and was found in Seattle, and was shot and killed, by Ofc. Benjamin Kelly. The last time I saw my brother Greg was at the Riverside Pub, it was my birthday and he was filling in for the bands drummer, he was jammin and so happy, doing what he loved!! I can never hear Smashing Pumpkins without thinking of my brother, my hero, a great drummer and a great man, Greg. Thanks, for the oppurtunity to release my feelings, I appreciate it.
