When I heard the announcement that Beck was playing Marymoor this summer I was beyond excited. For years Beck has been one of my favorite artists. His newest album ‘Morning Phase’ is nothing short of amazing and I find myself listening to it over and over again on a regular basis. With that being said, I had never seen him perform live before Wednesday and for some reason I had it set in my mind that he would be a somewhat stoic performer standing still behind a mic most of the time. I don’t know why I had thought this going in but it turns out <insert shocked expression here> I am an idiot.
Beck came out on stage and the entire venue was his. He was all over the stage, jumping and gyrating with a contagious smile and a flawless voice. His stage presence was giant and the 3 songs I got to spend in the photo pit were 3 of the best I’ve had the privilege to cover with my camera.
Between songs he looked out over the crowd and professed that Marymoor Park was one of the most picturesque venues he had seen this year. It truly was a beautiful night made more so by his music. It turns out that Beck used to spend his childhood summers in the Seattle area including spending 4th of July years ago at Marymoor Park which provided a nice dose of nostalgia to a perfect evening.
I’m more of a photo guy than a writer so I’m not going to embarrass myself and try to describe the art that is Beck. His music gives me goose bumps and the concert exceeded my expectations. It was an incredible show. Enough said?
